FOP Donates 700 Book Bags, School Supplies
From WTSB :: 1090 AM ::  For the fifth consecutive year, the Johnston County Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 88, has donated 700 book bags and school supplies to fill them. From April through July, lodge members collected monetary donations from businesses and private citizens to fund this project, known as the “Back to School Book Bag Program”. These bags and supplies will be distributed by Johnston County Schools social workers to students whose families have been impacted by the difficult economic times. The Johnston County Fraternal Order of Police is comprised of members from all law enforcement agencies throughout Johnston County.

(L to R) Front: Rafael Ibarra (junior, HOSA and FFA), Mrs. Tammy Wood (parent volunteer), Emily Wood (senior, HOSA and FFA), Lt. Jason Hutchins (Clayton Police and Past President of FOP - Fraternal Order of Police), Detective Brian O’Branovich (Smithfield Police and FOP Recruiter).

Back: Detective Ronald Daniels (Selma Police and FOP Vice President), Michael Baldwin (Retired New Jersey Corrections and FOP Sgt. of Arms), Kaylie Pilkington (junior, HOSA), Garrett Massengill (junior, student volunteer), Emily Edwards (junior, HOSA), Sarah Cook (junior, HOSA), Kristina Brake (FFA sponsor/teacher), Pat Deese (HOSA sponsor/teacher), Dr. Ed Croom (superintendent)

Under the leadership of HOSA sponsor, Pat Deese and FFA sponsor, Kristina Brake, Smithfield Selma High School HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and FFA (Future Farmers of America) student members donated one of their last remaining days of summer vacation to pack the bags with donated pencils, paper packs, glue sticks, pencil pouches, and composition books. All of this was accomplished at Facility Services on August 17th. To promote healthy living to reduce childhood obesity, Emily Wood, a senior at Smithfield Selma High School, included a brochure she created as part of her senior project.

Dr. Ed Croom, Superintendent, praised students, teachers, contributors, parent volunteers, and the Fraternal Order of Police for their contributions to make the first day of school a happy one for the recipients of these book bags. “The first day sets the tone for the rest of the school year. By providing these supplies, 700 children will have a better first day because they know someone cares enough to meet their needs. It is through the combined efforts of community and schools that we are able to create a successful future for our young people. This in turn, ensures a strong future for Johnston County. “
